Cross-linking kinetics of gelation of polymer gel under steady shear flow

Abstract:
Under steady shear conditions (1 -20 8.1〉, the apparent viscosity variation with time was investigated during the cr册s-linking reactions between HPAM and Cr3 ions by rheology instrument ( HAAKE RSI 50) The kinetic equation of cross-linking reaction under steady shear flow condition was developed. The experimental results show that gelation process under steady shear flow condition can be divided into four stages by change of apparent viscosity induction stage, gelation stage, size-limited stage and stable stage. When shear rate increases or the concentration of polymer and cross-linker decreases, obvious size-limited stage can not arise. The gelling time depends on the shear rates, carboxyl concentration on polyacrylamide ,Cr3+ concentration and hydrogen ion concentration. The apparent activation energy of cross-linking reaction is 60. 56 kj mol"1 under steady shear flow condition. Compared with the static cross-linking reaction, the carix>xyl groups on polymer have more effects on cross-linking reaction under steady shear flow, and the apparent activation energy decreases.
